The importance of GIS (geographic information system) has evolved and is evolving to the point that we now create not just maps but smart maps. 

Why smart? Because through the information available ur elected representatives, the staffs of our agencies and our private businesses can make more informed decisions on:

• how we grow as a community,
  
• how we make the best use of the investments we have in place and those we are about to make, and;
• how we increase productivity and efficiency. 

How are they smart? Unlike a flat, one-dimensional map, GIS mapping has layers that allow us to add descriptive information that is unlimited in depth and breadth and provides us the ability to not only show where something is but describe its quality and essences.  GIS provides a new way of exploring the world around us – both up close and far.

How much is it worth? The database they have begun and made great progress would have cost this community thousands of dollars to hire someone to build.

These advantages are why the work our students have begun is not only important but essential for us to better understand our community.
