How can a Management District reduce crime? PDF Print E-mail

A management district has no police powers and in all cases leaves police work up to the law enforcement agencies. But the law enforcement agencies in this area, and in the areas of those districts, appreciate the assistance of all citizens and groups. They encourage us to call in suspicious activitiy and be aware of our surroundings. They need our eyes and ears and help train our neighborhood watch teams. A management district in our area would be another set of eyes and ear and it can be much more.

Managment districts have provide much more to the local police. In addition, the district staff knows the businesses, property managers and serves as the voice for the property to the police as they know not only the captain over the area but the sargents and officers. Listed below are examples of what other management districts have provided:

  • A Houston management district provided the initial horses used by the Houston Police Department and supplied horses for many years after those first ones. There is no doubt that the best crowd control team is an officer on a horse.
  • A Houston management district provided cameras to allow an officer to watch more than one location and direct other officers to the one where trouble was brewing. The cameras are in a "store front" also provided by that District.
  • The predessor organization to Renaissance 1960 Improvement Corporation is assisting with funding the HPD store front in the WillowBrook Mall area. A major property owner on the east end of FM-1960 offered to provide a prominent location for use by the sheriff's deparment if R1960 would also use it. As R1960 is operated totally by volunteers we could not committ to providing such staffing. A management district will have paid staff and could work with the property owner and the Sheriff's Department.
  • A great example of a district playing a strong role in partnership with police is in Philadelphia. Click here to review the page at Center City District's web site where they present the services they provide as part of their "Crime Prevention" program. While at that site be sure to go to the "About Us" page and scan the services they provide that are those our area needs.
Crime watch organizations, CrimeStoppers and many others do make a difference as can a management district. First the legislature must create the district, appoint a Board of Directors who will develop a service plan with beneficial crime related programs and the staff of that organization implements the programs. We hope you will agree that managment districts do help reduce crime and a district in our area can also help reduce cirme.
