Preface: This question has been distributed in the community with the implication inserted that the effort has just begun and we are "rushing" to make the next legislative session. That is a FALSE statement and leads the reader believing something that is not true. Renaissance1960's predessor made a concerted effort the year before the 2005 and 2007 legislative sessions. They spent time here and in Austin with the legislators (in office at that time) working to implement the only effective tool the legislature has created to allow an area to help themselves. As the 2007 Legislative Session began the group was asked by our legislators to unite under one umbrella organization and secure public input and support prior to the 2009 legislative session. In early 2007 a series of "Community Development Leadership Workshops" was organized by the Houston Northwest Chamber to begin the process of gathering input from the community. This resulted in the birth of the organization now known as Renaissance 1960 Improvement Corporation. Armed with the information and work done by predessor organizations and a strong desire from the community to see revitalization of the corridor, the first steering committee meeting of Renaissance 1960 Improvement Corporation was held in July of 2007. During this process we have enjoyed frank and open conversations with our legislators that clearly define what they expected from us to show that both commercial property owners and residents support the creation of a management district. As you can see, this effort, totally undertaken by volunteers, has been underway for years and the recent concentrated effort has been underway since before the beginning of the 2007 legislative session.
