Student Summit, 10/10/2007 PDF Print E-mail

The Renaissance 1960 Corporation is working to create a better area to be enjoyed now and in the future. The recognition that today's students are tomorrow leaders lead to the first Student Summit where students were encouranged to review the community as it is today and dream about tomorrow. The Renaissance 1960 team was approached by Klein ISD and Spring ISD upper management and offered to assist in finding students who want to make a positive difference in the area and help it become all it can be. That offer lead to the Student Summit held on the evening of October 10, 2007.

The students are more interested and concerned in the future than many of us older folks realize. The many student-age cittizens in this area that care do not make the news very often. We are left by the mass media worrying that the majority of the ones in their generation are like those that usually make the news. What we saw in this summit is clear evidence that many of our area students are informed, concerned and looking for a way to participate in making a very positive difference.

The summit convened on time at 6:30 PM. The Districts provided busses to take the students to Klein Forest High School where they were introduced to the issues identified by the Renaissance team based on the numerous public meetings held the past few years. They were also asked to identify any other primary needs.Image

They watched an inspiring video that you can seeing using the following link.

The students then broke up into whichever group they wanted to join and talked about the issues they felt were most important related to those topics. The members of the group selected a scribe to list the items on a flip chart pad. After 30 minutes of conversation, debate, laughter, and healthy dialog they completed the one or two sheets and selected a spokesperson(s) to share their items with everyone.

Each group selected at least two speakers. All members of the Education group went to the microphone and several of the members shared the product of the group's work. All members of each group were very committed and throughout the presentations they were very anxious to be next. Everyone was very impressed with the enthusiasm and the ability to clearly convey the ideas generated within their respective groups to the assembly of over 80 attentive listeners.

The summit adjourned on time at 7:30 PM.

To maintain the momentum that began at this summit the Renaissance 1960 team--that now includes 65+ students from most of the area high schools--wants to encourage the continuation of the dialog. To that end we have created an internet Group Site where discussions can be created and ideas pursued. We hope it will be an assembly point for these students and the many others that will want to be a part of creating the future.
