Sheriff Tommy Thomas of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office hosted a multi-agency public safety awareness task force the weekend of May 16-17, 2008. The task force was underway Friday and Saturday from 7 pm until 3 am.
In addition to Sheriff’s Deputies, Officers from the Houston Police Department, Tomball Police Department, Department of Public Safety, and the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office participated in patrolling the area between I-45 and Jones Road along FM 1960, and along 249 from the County line to I-45, The Officers involved in this operation will not only focus on traffic related violations, a major concern in this area, but they will also check businesses and parking lots in that area for the outward appearance of street crime. The target zones for the task force were the areas near FM1960 from I-45 to Jones Road and SH 249 from I-45 to the north city limits of Tomball. The purpose of the task force was to increase safety and awareness in the area. There is a high incident rate of traffic accidents in both of these areas, many of which are alcohol rated. As a “safety awareness” initiative, this operation was not Zero-Tolerance. From the five agencies involved, approximately 120 additional patrol units were distributed in the target zones including one helicopter.
